RedMark's Plog (Puppy Log)

October 14, 2008:

As of now, we have two females left. One we call "Purple" because we used that color to mark her as a puppy. Purple is very smart, very quick to take to house training. While not fully house trained, she gets the idea and whines to go outside. The second girl is a little smaller and we call her "Unmarked" because we didn't put any identifying marks on her as a puppy. Unmarked is bold and quite active, as is Purple, and is also taking well to house training. Both puppies readily retrieve a toy or ball although Purple is a little more inclined to bring it back to you. Both puppies will make wonderful house pets, particularly if children are in the household, they will make terrific hunting dogs and outstanding competitive obedience dogs ... all they need is a little maturity and training.

September 14, 2008:

Puppies started going to their new homes last week. One female and the male found serious working homes while another female found a wonderful family to be a part of. The three remaining females are showing their strong field pedigree, already able to retrieve 50-foot long marks with ease. Our house is quite noisy righ now as we are starting to separate the puppies for part of the day, each in their own crate. They are cataching onto what "house training" means.

August 24, 2008:

The puppies spent quite a bit of time outside today. We're beginning to see some personality traits emerge, almost to the point of not having to look at our painted markings on each dog to tell which one it is. Weaning is complete, all six pups are now eating hard, dry food. Storm is pretty much through with all of them; one quick sniff at each one and she is content to go about her business. All-in-all, all puppies are healthy and continue to grow at a nice pace.

August 3, 2008:

Until now, the entire litter spent most of the time either asleep or crawling around the whelping pen, interacting very little with one another. Today, they all have finally "found their legs" and are walking in all-fours. With their eyes open and their new found mobilty skill, much interaction and playing has started.

July 30, 2008:

Today marks the two-week milestone. All puppies continue to add weight at a remarkable rate. Eyes are mostly open now and they are responding to light and movement.

July 28, 2008:

Average weight today is 35.7 oz.

July 27, 2008:

Average weight today is 33.3 oz. Eyes are just beginning to show signs of opening, they are small slits but don't yet respond to movements.

July 26, 2008:

Average weight today is 30.6 oz.

July 25, 2008:

Average weight today is 28.5 oz.

July 24, 2008:

Average weight today is 25.5 oz

July 23, 2008:

One week old today and the average weight is 23.0 oz, puppies ranged from 20 oz to 25 oz meaning that they gained an average of 14.5 oz. in seven days, nearly double their birth weight.

July 22, 2008:

Average weight today is 20.1 oz.

July 21, 2008:

Average weight today is 17.4 oz.

July 20, 2008:

Average weight today is 14.5 oz.

July 19, 2008:

Average weight today is 12.6 oz, with actual weights ranging from 11.5 to 14 oz.

July 18, 2008:

Puppies continue to put on weight, average weight today is 10.6 oz. "Contentment" is the perfect descriptor of this litter, hardly a peep has been heard from any of them. All six pups along with Storm were loaded into the truck for a trip to the veterinarians office ... it's time to remove dew claws. Storm kept a constant vigil during the drive and kept the puppies quiet before and after dew claw removal.

July 17, 2008:

Today's weigh-in shows that all puppies are gaining weight. They averaged 8.5 oz at birth and are now averaging 9.7 oz; good growth progress. Storm is turning out to be a good mother, she is attentive to her brood and performing all her motherly duties.

July 16, 2008 (4:00 PM):

For no particular reason, Rich decided to work from home today; lucky thing he did because around 1:00 PM today, Diane discovered Storm in the family room acting a little unusual and at 1:05 PM, the first puppy was born. Both Storm and the new puppy were rushed upstairs to the whelping room and, within 20 minutes puppy number two arrived. To make a long story short, by 3:00 PM, Stormy delivered five females and one male averging between 7 and 10 ounces. Mother is doing fine, puppies are doing fine.
